WAS THE BAR OPEN AFTER YEVONNE BRANNON'S ELECTION AS CHAIR OF WAKEUP WAKE COUNTY?

WakeUP Wake County just announced their leadership team for 2009 and lo and behold, who comes out on the top of the ticket as Chair but former County Commissioner Yevonne Brannon.

Those new to Wake County may not remember her, but those who have been around since the late 90s certainly do.

Brannon was clearly recognized as the most liberal member of the Wake County Commissioners - on a board that had six Democrats and just one Republican.

What citizens remember well and what cost her any credibility then and now was her infamous flippant disregard for the impact tax increases in the hundreds of dollars would have on Wake County families.

At a 1999 planning retreat, Brannon pushed for a property tax increase of 13 cents - the largest increase among various proposals being considered by Wake Commissioners.

As the News and Observer reported, Republican County Commissioner Herb Council finally agreed to the highest property tax increase proposal on the table - 13 cents.

From the News and Observer:

The more the commissioners talked, the higher the proposed increase got. The figure reached 13 cents when Commissioner Betty Lou Ward was told that was roughly what corresponds to a $200 average tax-bill increase.
"Sold!" Brannon yelled as she leapt from her seat in a meeting room of Wake Forest University's Graylyn Conference Center. "Hey, you guys - the bar is open!"

(News and Observer - February 20, 1999)

What will Yevonne try to sell us as Chair of WakeUP Wake County? Hopefully she'll step away from the bar and sober up. But we doubt it.

IS PEDER ZANE OF THE NEWS AND OBSERVER CHEATING ON DOWNTOWN RALEIGH

Cue the music.

At first blush it would appear so.

When we last found found Peder Zane, he was engaged in quite a libidinous relationship with downtown Raleigh.

And now it seems his eyes have strayed on to his latest fancy - June Guralnick, Executive Director of Raleigh's Art Commission.

Affair? Cheating on downtown Raleigh?

We don't think so. We liken it more to a menage a trois.

If you're dating, let her pick up the tab. At $72,000 a year in Raleigh funds, she can afford it.

MAYOR MEEKER'S STATE OF THE CITY ADDRESS

What perhaps was fascinating about Mayor "downtown first" Meeker's State of the City speech was not all that was in it, but what was lacking.

What he avoided talking about.

Mayor Meeker went through a litany of items - lavish spending for Fayetteville Street, Raleigh's new Convention Center, etc. All things that are not basic functions of local government.

But addressing crime is. And it was completely absent from his remarks. Not a single word said.

NOTHING.

Just think about the high profile murders that have occurred this year. Crime remains rampant along Tarboro Road and Bragg Street. Just this past week found yet another violent murder committed on Camden Street - just blocks from where Mayor Meeker has pushed multi-million dollar public investments along Fayetteville Street.

Raleigh saw a 48% increase in murders in 2008. One might think that would be worthy of discussion among the Mayor's overview of the "State of Raleigh."

Raleigh's violent crime went against national trends last year and saw a substantial upswing.

So the next time you personally experience theft of your personal property or are the unfortunate victim of violent crime, remember what Mayor "benign neglect" Meeker had to say about it........

NOTHING.

250 CRIMES IN FIVE YEARS AND HOW DID OUR FORMER HUMAN RELATIONS DIRECTOR RESPOND

Cue the music.

Three violents deaths and hundreds of crimes over five years on a small strip of road known as Camden Street in Meeker's "benign neglect" area of downtown Raleigh. And how did former Human Relations Director Hardy Watkins respond in relation to these "humane relations?"

According to the News & Observer.

"Some have tried to improve conditions in the neighborhood before. In 2001, members of Revelation Baptist Church and their pastor, Hardy Watkins, cultivated a garden on an empty lot on Camden Street to give public housing residents a chance to grow and eat fresh vegetables. The garden is across the street from where Anthony Wright was shot."

This rivals the nonsense put on every year in the form of the Mayor's Unity Day.

RALEIGH SAYS DO AS WE SAY, NOT AS BEV PERDUE DOES

The photos above come just a few mere feet from one of the doors of the State Capitol in downtown Raleigh.

What raised my eyebrows concerning a fairly insignificant sign and uneven pavement on walkways around the Capitol was a story on WRAL News.

Apparently the Pfeiffer family is out $2600 to fix repairs on the sidewalk fronting their home. Raleigh officials told them the sidewalk must be repaired. The property owners incur the cost of repairs.

City code language states that:

Sec. 12-1037.1.

REPAIR OF SIDEWALKS AND DRIVEWAYS BY PROPERTY OWNERS.

It shall be the duty of every property owner in the City to maintain in good repair and safe condition, the sidewalk and driveway abutting his property for the safe passage of pedestrians over the same except as otherwise provided in §7-2008.

What struck me as intriguing is that the walkway pictured above shares similiar uneven surfaces. However, it seems that posting a warning sign will suffice.

The Pfeiffer family is now out apparently $2600. It would have been much cheaper for them if they could have posted a sign.

Carl Dawson with Raleigh Public Works says they investigate sidewalk complaints and give property owners 30 days to fix the problem. If you want to email him about the Capitol's sidewalks, he can be reached at carl.dawson@ci.raleigh.nc.us.

Let's see if he gives Governor Perdue just 30 days to fix the problem.

RALEIGH AND RAP ARTISTS

If you take the family out to watch the deification of yet another cultural icon - Christopher Wallace, take a look back at his storied Triangle past.

Yes, his name is Christopher Wallace, but he was better known as Notorious B.I.G.

He was better known to local law enforcement as a troublemaker.

The News and Observer has an interesting tidbit about Christopher's arrest for and pleading guilty to charges of possesion of cocaine and marijuana with intent to sell in 1991.

And now we have Carmike Cinemas, among others, pushing the deification of him to make a buck. Nice job.

We've come a long way baby.

Oh yes, let's not forget about another rap icon, Foxy Brown, and the iron incident.

I'm not posting links to their garbage. I'm sure it can be found easily enough on YouTube.

It sure is a far cry from Marvin Gaye's 1971 "What's Going On." Jesse Martin of Law Order fame will play Marvin in an upcoming movie. Your blogger will attend that one.

THE ABORTION RIGHTS RALLY THAT WASN'T

On Thursday, January 22, 2009 the abortion rights movement in the Triangle was in full swing - all 15 of them. The picture above represents the entire crowd present for their "rally" at the Capitol.

As a comparison, you can check out the crowd at the January 17, 2009 Right to Life "March" in downtown Raleigh that had over 1000 attendees. I documented the rally so no one could question the crowd versus the crowd above.

January 17, 2009 event footage: click here or click here.

Well, the abortion rights "rally" was supposed to be at the Capitol, but apparently the permit situation got messed up with the Capitol grounds so they had to go elsewhere (as one of the abortion supporters told me).

So they positioned themselves at the corner of Fayetteville Street and Morgan Street. Who knows if they had a permit.

The "Reverend" Tom Rhodes of the Unitarian Fellowship was supposed to give a stirring speech on faith and pro-choice ideology. I guess he got tied up eating a vegan lunch or something.

All in all, I guess you could say the abortion rally got aborted.

Bummer.

(Seriously - you folks on the left need to read your Saul Alinsky. Otherwise you would not do such pathetic events.)

"[M]any expecting his words to be chiseled into marble some day." They have drank the Kool-Aid, folks. We're at Jonestown. Remember Jim Jones and that cult? We are at Jonestown. We're near the Hale-Bopp comet here with the Drive-By Media. Now, this is the second such story of this type I've seen. Parents in Wake County, North Carolina, at an elementary school there, kids "will be required to eat in classrooms on Tuesday so they can spend two hours watching the [immaculation] on TV." Another school is going to force the kids to eat lunch at 10:30 so that they can watch this uninterrupted. They're then going to be required to write a paper about the historical significance of this. These will be displayed on a bulletin board somewhere. This will make sure the project is carried out, and some parents are saying that they're going to keep kids home if the school doesn't show it. Some say they won't come if it is shown. I thought we were all together in this. This has never before been a requirement at schools that I know of, not Reagan, Bush, Clinton, or Bush. But the oath of office doesn't seem to be the thing. But no, they're going to watch the whole thing, the parade and all that. They must, and they're going to write essays about it.

ATTEND - STOP FORCED ANNEXATION MEETING

StopNCAnnexation Update

The next meeting of the Joint Commission is this coming Thursday. The location is different from where the last three meetings were held.

Meeting details:
Day: ThursdayTime: 10:00 am - 12:00 noon
Date: January 22nd
Location: Room 1027 - Legislative Building
Address: 16 West Jones Street, Raleigh, 27601
Directions:
http://www.ncga.state.nc.us/help/directions.html

The final meeting is less than five days away. It is critical that the Joint Commission members hear from hundreds of people from across NC while they hammer out the details of the recommendations they plan to unveil on the 22nd.

I hope that you realize the impact that your input has had on the direction of the conversation in this Joint Commission.

When the Senate decided to get involved in studying the annexation issue, all the signs were there that some Senate members were more interested in taking control of the conversation than in allowing the citizens and the growing number of pro-reform legislators to continue to control it. It looked like some pro-city Senators were stepping in to rescue the cities from the outcry of the people. But that hasn't happened thanks to the strong committment by so many people to stick together and keep writing, calling and doing whatever it took to be at the commission meetings.

The comments coming back from the commission members to some of the calls and letters has been encouraging to say the least. It appears that the legislators are listening to the people and are recognizing that there are serious problems with how city initiated annexation has been used. And they seem to realize that the people of this State are not going to rest until the laws are made right with the American principle of protecting individual rights.

No matter how much the city lobbyists would like to transform this wonderful State into the "Soviet Socialist Republic of North Carolina", that is not what the people will accept and that is not the kind of place we want to live in.

Please take the time to remind the Commission members that 'we the people' want to see real meaningful changes made to the annexation laws_"no more tweaks". We want change that restores just rights and protections to the property owners.

1. Meaningful oversight of city initiated annexation
2. Meaningful services defined and required
3. A meaningful voice in the final decision to join a city or not

I have also attached a text document that lists the home addresses and phone numbers of all the Legislators on the Commission. You can also find this information online @
ttp://www.stopncannexation.com/Joint_Committee.htm

A couple of other things that you could do, that would raise the public discussion of the issue and help keep the annexation issue in the media, would be to write letters to the editor and call into radio talk shows. These two actions can be done for the next few months and will help the progress of the issue through the 2009 Legislative Session.

One thing that is very clear from the statements from the Legislators and the reaction of the NCLM during this study of the annexation laws; we are all being heard and taken seriously. This is unprecedented in all the past studies.
Let's keep the pressure up and take this issue to a successful resolution this year.

IF THIS HAPPENED ON FAYETTEVILLE STREET WITH THE CLOCKWORK FASHION OCCURING AT THE ENLOE HIGH SCHOOL AREA ...

What would Charles "Livable Streets" Meeker do?

Yet another violent crime has been committed at/in the Enloe High School area.

Of course this area around Tarboro Road, Raleigh Boulevard, Glascock Street, etc. doesn't fall within Mayor Meeker or Mitch Silver's vision for livable streets.

They've dumped millions onto Fayetteville Street and in the process completely neglected areas of Raleigh desperately in need of true social services and more importantly police protection.

Police moral is low. The Raleigh Police Department is understaffed. Ask some of Raleigh's finest off the record and they'll tell you how disappointed they are in Meeker and City Manager Russell Allen.

Maybe you can tell folks at the MLK celebration tomorrow how much you've neglected their community in favor of pouring millions into upper crust "white-collar" restaurants on Fayetteville Steet.

Maybe an apology is more in order....

Or maybe you can just blame President Bush's "human rights" record for the problem as you did recently. After all you're just a Mayor and this is your city.

Anne McLaurin - could you please talk to your husband and ask him to fix the problem? He is the Mayor and you are on the school board.

ATTEND - NC RIGHT TO LIFE RALLY AND MARCH IN RALEIGH SATURDAY!

Until Wake County Commissioner Betty Lou Ward moves forward with her recommendation that public records be put online, we're going to help with her personal records.

We'll post them for her.

Stay tuned .........

THE 2030 COMPREHENSIVE PLAN - RALEIGH'S NC BUDGET DOCUMENT

Anyone involved with politics of any persuasion in North Carolina knows how both sides utilize the NC budget as a political weapon.

Politicians on both sides of the aisle anxiously await the week before elections to know what type of mail attacking them will arrive in voter mailboxes.

Likewise, Raleigh's Comprehensive Plan has 460 pages of goodies.

Maybe Meeker, Koopman, Stephenson, Baldwin and McFarlane would like to explain this one to irate Raleigh parents.

TERRORIST RALLY IN RALEIGH JANUARY 5, 2009 - PART TWO

If what these folks were supporting wasn't so inherently dangerous to the survival of a democratic Isreal and a world free from terror, they would be so

PATHETICALLY LAME.

These folks need to read Saul Alinsky's chapter on Tactics in Rules for Radicals.

It would not surprise me if somewhere some Z. Smith Reynolds money was involved with this.

RALEIGH PUBLIC ART - THE GIFT THAT KEEPS ON GIVING

Cue the music.

In the immortal words of James Brown ......

Please, Please, Please

Raleigh appears bent on moving forward with yet another taxpayer funded boondoggle to spend millions on public art.

In today's N&O, Raleigh City Clerk Gail Smith is quoted as saying:

"Yes, we like the concept, and yes, we want to move forward ...."

What a tasty election morsel. Maybe folks like Rodger "I phone in my votes" Koopman, Mary Ann Baldwin, Russell Stephenson or Nancy McFarlane in potential swing districts can tell their constituents how they raised their property taxes and water and sewer fees to put more Light + Time landmarks all over Raleigh.

Or better yet, Mayor Charles "unlivable streets" Meeker can explain to people on the brink of losing their homes how he needed to raise property taxes to pay for this.

And just think, each time a new Raleigh capital project goes up, the issue magically arises from the grave.

So,

Please, Please, Please .....

Vote for this.

Opposition candidates are salivating.

McNeal supports the State Board of Education's proposal to count retests for students who fail the initial tests. McNeal called the idea a "no-brainer."

Well thank goodness it was a "no brainer."

It's all part of Bill McNeal and Tom Oxholm's "School District's Journey to Excellence."

BETTY LOU WARD - THE EXPERIENCED TRAVELER

Monday afternoon's Wake Commissioners meeting proved to be pretty lively.

Beyond the fact that Harold Webb cut off Commissioner Tony Gurley from speaking against Webb's sacred cow of forced busing (yes - the great program that puts minority children on old buses for hours on end each week and somehow that makes them smarter), Paul Coble seemed to provoke a hyper-sensitive response from Betty Lou Ward.

Hmmm.

Commissioner Coble made an entirely reasonable suggestion. That being that the County Commissioners participate in budget cuts as they are asking all Wake County Departments to do.

Paul did not even suggest doing away with trips, which would have suited Wake Community just fine. He suggested that perhaps just one commissioner travel and report back.

Heck he even suggested that Betty Lou could attend "since she was so experienced at it."

Wonder why?

Because Paul Coble suggested taking away Betty's sacred cow.

Betty Lou Ward is legendary for never meeting a taxpayer funded trip she didn't like.

Watch the video here. Under the video screen go to the "Jump To" bar and scroll down to the consent agenda. It's the first video that will appear once you jump to the consent agenda.

And what does Betty Lou Ward have to say about Wake County taxpayer funded trips?

"Commissioner Betty Lou Ward said she supports putting the public records online ...... "

"You're held up to a lot more scrutiny when you use public money than if you're in a private sector job," Ward said.

"Ward said more oversight might be needed to ensure county money isn't wasted."

"I think there will definitely be changes. In the 20 years that I've been a commissioner, nothing like this has ever happened," she said.

You can probably gather that Betty Lou was not speaking about her personal trips.

We applaud Betty Lou Ward for wanting to put the public records online and hope that she'll hold herself to the same standard she wants of others.

Here's a great place where a link
should be posted front and center.

Ask Betty Lou Ward why her travel records aren't posted online. You can email her at _____________ . Oh that's right, she's the only Wake Commissioner who does not list an email address.

WHEN RALEIGH GETS A NEW MAYOR THE HUMAN RIGHTS OF TARBORO ROAD AND BRAGG STREET RESIDENTS SHOULD START IMPROVING

"A mention of human rights led Mayor Charles Meeker to say America's human rights record should start improving now that Obama is replacing Bush."

(N&O 12/6/08)

Maybe when somebody replaces Meeker the human rights and public safety of residents around Tarboro Road and Bragg Street will start improving.

Pot meet kettle Mr. Meeker.

RALEIGH ARTS COMMISSION WANTS TO SPEND AT LEAST $1.13 MILLION FOR PUBLIC ART AT NEW CLARENCE LIGHTNER PUBLIC SAFETY CENTER ..... FOR STARTERS

The economy's in the tank. Raleigh has just significantly raised taxes and fees on Raleigh residents with Mayor Meeker seeking further increases, crime is soaring and basic police protection services remain underfunded.

So what do you do?

Well of course, blow more money on sprucing up downtown Raleigh.

Raleigh's Arts Commission has proposed that "half of one percent of expenditures of capital improvement municipal projects (involving public buildings, parks and streetscapes) to the creation and development of public art.

The additional millions required to meet this proposal is staggering.

Just think how many more
Light + Time Towers could "grace" Raleigh under this proposal.

For the new (not voted on) Clarence Lightner Public Safety Center new art would run $1.13 million under this proposal.

Maybe if their lucky, the residents on Bragg Street and Tarboro Road can get the nets changed on their basketball courts.

Raleigh's Budget and Economic Development Committee was scheduled to meet this morning to discuss this proposal. Let's hope this idea was properly flushed.

Of course I would not be surprised if they don't find a way to blame the homebuilders for lacking the funds to put more beautiful art like
Light + Time around Raleigh.
