Z. SMITH REYNOLDS ALL ABOUT ANTI-GROWTH IN WAKE COUNTY (IN ONE WAY OR ANOTHER)

The Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation has recently awarded WakeUp Wake County a $35,000 grant for 2009.

This comes on the heels of granting pro-abortion advocate Susan Hill, one of the largest purveyors of the wholesale slaughter of innocent human life in America, $30,000 for her 2007 efforts.

Karen Rindge of WakeUp Wake County has a background with the abortion mill industry as well, having worked for Planned Parenthood Federation of America. I guess she just moved from one anti-growth policy organization to another.

WANT TO TOSS CONDOMS OR PIN THE BEARD ON THE ANARCHIST TO BRING IN THE NEW YEAR?

Hat Tip to Ginny Skalski at 30threads.com for the story.

New Raleigh reports that ACRE (Action for Community in Raleigh) has a new year's eve gig where you can throw condoms and pin the beard on the anarchist.

Maybe the anarchists will be there instead of engaging in this type of activity tonight.

You can find event details here.

And I thought they all hung out over in Chapel Hill at this location.

WAKE COMMUNITY WISHES FOR THE NEW YEAR ....

Wake Community hopes all grassroots/public policy activists and groups will move beyond inside the box cookie cutter solutions in tackling the challenges we face locally and statewide.

Sometimes others can say things better than ourselves and I draw upon a quote by Mark Kleinschmidt, a Chapel Hill Town Council Member, speaking on former Chapel Hill resident, Town Council member and homosexual advocate Joe Herzenberg:

"He didn't move to New York and make a lot of money and complain with his friends over cocktails about the plight of poor people in the South," Kleinschmidt said. "... He was an activist in the real sense of the word: He was active."

In other words, he didn't forward emails, set up facebook groups or head down to the local eatery to hear a monthly speech.

YOUR NEW CHAIR OF THE RALEIGH CITIZEN ADVISORY COUNCIL

Ana Duncan Pardo

Part of the left-wing non-profit structure in North Carolina, she works as the communications coordinator for Toxic Free NC and in the past has worked for FLOC (Farm Labor Organizing Committee, AFL-CIO), a group notorious for defending the rights of “undocumented” farm workers.

She currently serves as
Chair of the Hillsborough CAC.

Voter registration is unaffiliated.

Her term begins on January 21, 2009.

Wake Community wonders if the new head of this governmental body will be out
supporting lawbreakers on Christmas Eve.

Final note: Our sources tell us the vote was 10-8. Yes, 10-8. Bet there was not a single voice on our side in the room. We are usually too busy at supper clubs.

IS PEDER ZANE OF THE N&O HAVING SEX WITH DOWNTOWN RALEIGH?

Cue the music.

Related Story (N&O - April 13, 2008)

Okay, let's "strip-bare" this story. I suspect we can reach climax quick enough.

From the N&O Lifestyles section.

First the title: Raleigh rising.

Next the subtitle: As arts, dining and entertainment options expand bit by bit, downtown throbs with a glorious sense of possibility. (emphasis added)

I feel dirty already.

If we have any of Raleigh's finest still left on the force, can some of you run down to Fayetteville Street and make sure he's not doing anything indecent.

I think he and downtown need to get a room. I'm sure our Mayor would recommend this one.

On a more serious note, beyond Zane's obvious attempts to sex-up downtown Raleigh, is the fact that he has partaken of way too much flavor-aid on this infatuation with downtown Raleigh. I've never heard anyone put "Raleigh's Renaissance" in such overt sexual overtones though.

THINK RALEIGH CITY ELECTIONS DON'T RELATE TO WAKE SCHOOLS? THINK AGAIN.

Wake Community is reviewing Raleigh's proposed comprehensive plan and hope you will do so as well. You can access it at sociallyenginneringRaleigh2030.

The nifty folks who put together Raleigh's comprehensive plan tucked in a treasure trove of gems. They run the gamut of local public policy issues.

It seems both Raleigh's illuminati and the "planning experts" at the Wake County Public School System will force economically diverse schools on Raleigh families in one way or the other.

Here's what Raleigh's proposing (among a whole host of other items).

Raleigh's Comprehensive Plan - Page 238

Policy RC 32
Coordinate with WCPSS to co-locate affordable housing in conjunction with the development of new school sites to encourage economic diversity within new neighborhoods and schools and reduce the need for busing. (2, 3, 4, 6)

"Reduce the need for busing." So Raleigh ascribes that there is a need to continue a process that annually like clockwork evokes outrage in parents throughout Raleigh and Wake County.

So what Raleigh is saying is that if they can't reduce the "need" for busing, then this type of massive unnecessary shifting of large numbers of students across Wake County is okay. Any other type of large scale commuting is wholly unacceptable.

They sure don't soft-peddle the "need" for people to earn a living and commute to work. That clogs up our roads and pours pollutants into the air. Nevermind what an old school bus and thousands of school children being shuffled around Raleigh does. Let's also not speak about the impact this has on children.

Parents who have been showing up at assignment hearings in Raleigh, mark your calendar. You need to be at these meetings also and you need to go online and protest Raleigh's plans to socially engineer our schools. You can comment online now. The meetings take place in January.

TUESDAY'S SCHOOL BOARD MEETING - DECEMBER 16, 2008

At yesterday's Wake County School Board Meeting, a motion was made to add to the legislative agenda a request to remove the cap on charter schools.

And the tally?

For - Ron Margiotta, Horace Tart

Against - Lori "diversity works but I can't prove it" Millberg, Patti Head, Kevin Hill, Eleanor Goettee, Anne McLaurin

And you expected from a school board so in tune with parental desires?

SOUND FAMILIAR?

It pains this Carolina grad to give props, but kudos to Duke Student Abby Alger for rightly pointing out how Durham will dump millions into DPAC while neglecting true problems and the lower class in downtown Durham.

It's the same frustration we feel with "Downtown First" Mayor Meeker's virtual neglect of anything beyond livable streets. Not much bragging that Raleigh can do on Bragg Street or Tarboro Road.

I guess Meeks is not up to making
Bragg Street and Tarboro Road "livable."

Thanks Abby.

SPEAK UP WAKEUP!

Growth Matters has an excellent post on the latest move by the NC Association of County Commissioners.

The NC Association of County Commissioners, in their failed efforts to impose transfer taxes on an already tough real estate market, now wants to bypass voters. They will push to allow county governing bodies to impose all sorts of new taxes without seeking voter approval.

In essence Meeker has followed this principle with the array of downtown projects and the millions in debt he has saddled Raleigh residents. Raleigh residents were not allowed to voice their opinion on the Convention Center, City Plaza or the Fayetteville Street makeover. The latest? $226 million for a public safety center that he is
now trying to hand off the costs to the federal government.

SO WHAT'S IT GOING TO BE WAKEUP? ARE YOU FOR STRIPPING CITIZEN EMPOWERMENT?

IS THIS CHANGE WE CAN BELIEVE IN?

SPEAK UP WAKEUP!

CRITICAL? THESE ARE A FEW OF MAYOR MEEKER'S FAVORITE THINGS.

Cue the music.

If Raleigh was putting forward a bond package for this spring, would any of this make the list? Of course Mayor Meeker could put the Public Safety Center up for a vote, but that would be out of fashion for him. Meeks is at least smart enough to know that City Plazas, Convention Centers and Fayetteville Street makeovers would all be resoundingly rejected in light of real needs for Raleigh.

Go ahead and throw the
Ferris Wheel in as well. It's all a waste of money.

RALEIGH IDENTIFIES PROJECTS
FIT FOR FEDERAL STIMULUS FUNDING

The City of Raleigh has real projects that could be addressed immediately to create jobs with aid from the financial stimulus plan being crafted by President-elect Barack Obama’s transition team.

At a press conference today in City Hall, Mayor Charles Meeker said that the City of Raleigh is actively seeking its share of the stimulus package to improve its infrastructure, environment and economy. He said that 44 projects have been identified as designed, permitted and ready to implement in six to 12 months.

While the Mayor said the amount of the new administration’s proposed stimulus package has not been announced, it must be significant if it is to improve the severe economic situation. “Raleigh has one-tenth of one percent of the nation’s population,” he said. “Given that, our portion of the stimulus package should be significant.”

What is known is that the Obama transition team is seeking to mold a package that tracks the incoming administration’s policy ideas, puts people to work immediately, enhances sustainability and includes long-term benefits to the nation.

Mayor Meeker pointed out that, not only will these projects bring immediate economic stimulus and benefit to the residents, they fill the Obama Administration’s priorities.

Mayor Meeker featured four sustainability projects plus the $226 million Clarence E. Lightner Public Safety Center project that is being designed for LEED gold certification. The energy savings designed into the 16-story, 305,000- square-foot facility come to 15 percent or $600,000 annually. The facility will be designed in the fall of 2009.

The four sustainability projects total $4,725,179. A solar LED lighting project would upgrade the illumination in seven City facilities, including the Avery Upchurch Government Complex Parking Deck and perimeter, the Performing Arts Center Deck and perimeter, Cedar Hills Park, Lions Park, Walnut Creek Softball Complex, Millbrook Exchange Park and Marsh Creek lower lot. The project can be implemented in the next six to 12 months at a total cost $1,258,300.

Another of the sustainability initiatives would put solar thermal water heating into 11 City facilities at a cost of $466,879. The project could be started in the first quarter of 2009 and completed within four to six months.

The third sustainable offering is the Photo Voltaic Solar Array Project at the Neuse River Wastewater Treatment Plant that would generate renewable energy at a cost of $2.5 million. The City is evaluating three separate proposals from private developers that have been submitted to Progress Energy and the City for renewable energy. The project would produce from one to three megawatts of renewable energy. It would be located on City-owned land at the wastewater treatment plant and would be in support of Progress Energy’s efforts to meet its Renewable Energy and Efficiency Portfolio requirements through a 20-year Power Purchase Agreement.

The fourth sustainable project featured by Mayor Meeker was a green house gases inventory and emissions reduction strategy for a cost of up to $500,000.

Mayor Meeker said that the City of Raleigh has been placing the highest priority on sustainability for the past several years and these projects would further its effort to be the South’s most sustainable city. The Mayor referred to being the world’s first LED city, silver LEED certification for the training building at the Neuse River Wastewater Treatment Plant and the Raleigh Convention Center, and the conversion of the City’s fleet to hybrids, plug-ins or alternative fuel vehicles as but a few examples of Raleigh’s abiding commitment to sustainability.

The 39 other projects listed are more traditional such as the construction of facilities, greenway extensions, and park, transportation, sewer, stormwater and technology improvements.

For a listing and descriptions of all of the proposed projects, visit the City of Raleigh website at www.raleighnc.gov.

ATTEND THE SUPREME COURT HEARING FOR WAKECARES!

Dear Wake County Parents and Supporters of WakeCARES:

As you know, it's been a long battle for parents' rights regarding mandatory year round school and parental consent. In the recent round of reassignments, thousands more parents are effected in Wake County. The impact of this ruling will be felt state wide.

To review, our case was won in Superior Court, overturned in the NC Court of Appeals, and finally, a "stay" of the original order by Judge Manning, which required parental consent, was issued by the NC Supreme Court. As a result, Judge Manning's order stands, and as stated below, the Supreme Court will hear arguments next week!

We encourage all of those affected and interested to attend the hearing.

The Supreme Court of North Carolina has scheduled the oral arguments for the WakeCARES lawsuit for Tuesday, December 16, 2008 at 9:30 am.

The Supreme Court of North Carolina is located at: 2 East Morgan Street - Third Floor, Raleigh, NC.

Again, we appreciate your support, and would especially appreciate any donations that would help us cover our legal costs.

Thank you!

TO PAT AT THE COUNTY COMMISSIONER MEETING WHO REFERRED TO WAKE SCHOOLS AS TIN SHANTIES

Here's what one looks like:

Get real.

Your comments are very insightful (1:38:30 mark)

It's much easier to just jump on the bandwagon of the
HHBA (Hate Home Builders Association) than to look at the emperor parading around with no clothes.

Yes, it's all just the home builders fault.

Poor test scores, massive waste, a flawed student assignment process that angers parents annually and questionable land deals.

Yes, it's all the home builders fault.

WAKE COUNTY SCHOOLS: WHEN A CUT IS NOT A CUT

The Wake County School Board Committee of the Whole met early this afternoon to review cuts recommended by Wake Schools Superintendent Del Burns. The document above (click on the document to enlarge) details those recommendations. It includes both recommendations for the reductions in state level and county level appropriations.

Let’s take a look at returns to Wake County.

Growth - $3,236,572

This reflects the $2.8 million figure that has been previously discussed for enrollment projections that never materialized. Costs associated with student enrollment make the figure larger than $2.8 million.

When looking at this figure, remember the following:

THESE ARE COSTS THE WAKE COUNTY SCHOOL SYSTEM NEVER INCURRED. THESE STUDENTS NEVER ENTERED THE SCHOOL SYSTEM. THIS IS NOT A COST IN THE FIRST PLACE.

Simply put, it is money that should be returned to Wake County regardless. It is not a “cut.” It is money that was over budgeted in the first place.

Once again, it is not a “cut.”

But of course, it will be reported as a “cut.”

That represents 57% of the “cuts.”

That’s right. 57% of the money returned to Wake County is not actually a “cut.”

Once again, 57% of the money returned to Wake County is not actually a “cut.”
