Wonder what Meeker thinks about all those "outsiders" from New Jersey spending millions at hockey games.

UNITY DAY 2011

Mayor Meeker's final "Unity" Day will take place tomorrow at the Raleigh Convention Center. Raleigh's Human Relations Commission will present and discuss the recommendations and responses resulting from the 2010 Community Dialogues Report - "Many Faces, One Community."

The report is based on suggestions from 100 people of whom only 61% say they always vote in municipal elections.

In Part III, Section F, of Recommendations, it states:

1. Develop diversity training for its employees, including officers of the Raleigh Police Department.

3. Embrace and accept the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community. Participants recommended that the City of Raleigh become more involved with LGBT issues and develop collaborative partnerships through the LGBT Center of Raleigh and the Center at N.C. State University. Adding gender identity and expression to the City’s nondiscrimination policy and providing domestic partner benefits to City of Raleigh employees would show a commitment to this community. Participants also voiced the hope that the City will formally recognize the contributions of its LGBT community by developing initiatives, offering statements of support, sponsoring events and making appointments to boards and commissions. The LGBT community adds to the economic vitality and culture of our city, and its members are active in every part of Raleigh’s economy.

We wonder - if 50 people crash their encampment at Edenton and Hillsborough to do a little free speech, what will they do? Would they call Raleigh police?

MCFARLANE THE ENABLER

Mayor-elect Nancy McFarlane said in an interview with The News & Observer that she’s in talks with a downtown property owner who is “interested” in hosting the group. McFarlane declined to elaborate but said she hopes to make progress in the next week.

“I can’t tell you the details because I haven’t worked anything out yet,” she said. “We’re talking through some of the possibilities.”

The group uses a de-escalation team to anticipate conflicts and serve as ambassadors to police. “Our actions thus far have been very peaceful,” said demonstrator Kurt Zehnder.

So we've witnessed Occupy Raleigh, in just a few short days, engage in activities that necessitated law enforcement involvement.

And McFarlane's busy at work helping to find them some space to camp out at in downtown Raleigh.

We also asked Raleigh City Manager Russell Allen about the violation of Raleigh's sign ordinace by Occupy Raleigh protestors and their encampment at the meeting of Hillsborough and Edenton Streets. We received this quick and gracious reply:

This is State owned property in the sidewalk and grassy area in front of the Capitol. I believe the State has allowed these signs as a part of the picketing by this group. The City does not allow signage within its rights of way.

The “encampment” at Hillsborough and Edenton is on private property. Camping is allowed as a general use in all zoning districts.

We also see Raleigh FIST's (a socialist organization) Dante Strobino, who lengthened his rap sheet by getting arrested at a Wake County Board of Education meeting, worked to organize the protest at NCSU also. Raleigh FIST is part of the 54.2% Coalition of "concerned parents and families" who complained about all the turmoil on the Wake County Board of Education.

I guess since they accomplished their political goal of wrestling the Wake County Board of Education from parents, students and families, they can get back to ignoring socio-econoomically disadvantaged children and move on to other socialist agitations.

AND SOON TO BE MAYOR NANCY MCFARLANE IS WORKING, WITHOUT PUBLIC TRANSPARENCY, TO ENABLE THESE FOLKS.

Today is Veterans Day. Maybe the deadheads should walk across the Capitol grounds and thank them. Don't hold your breath.

Billed as their largest fundraiser of the year, the Hargett Street YWCA this past Wednesday held their Academy of Women Awards Ceremony.

(Note - Another big fundraiser for them is picking up their annual check from the City of Raleigh - increased this year by 25% to $12,500. See page 80 of Raleigh's budget document here.)

And lo and behold who are they honoring? None other than Yevonne Brannon, chaos creation queen, for "government".

Let's review her past and present.

In a 2009 N&O letter to the editor Brannon stated about the Wake BOE:

"We never experienced such lack of decorum ..."

"We all obeyed .... the unwritten rules of courtesy and integrity...."

"We are not serving our county when our excellent reputation is smeared weekly with political shenanigans that show little concern for our quality of life in Wake."

Let's review that "courtesy, integrity and decorum" from Brannon's service in "government" as a Wake County Commissioner.

At a 1999 planning retreat, Brannon pushed for a property tax increase of 13 cents - the largest increase among various proposals being considered by Wake Commissioners.

As the News and Observer reported, Republican County Commissioner Herb Council finally agreed to the highest property tax increase proposal on the table - 13 cents.

From the News and Observer:

The more the commissioners talked, the higher the proposed increase got. The figure reached 13 cents when Commissioner Betty Lou Ward was told that was roughly what corresponds to a $200 average tax-bill increase.

"Sold!" Brannon yelled as she leapt from her seat in a meeting room of Wake Forest University's Graylyn Conference Center. "Hey, you guys - the bar is open!"

What’s wrong with this picture?

The Federal Government gets its bond rating lowered, interest rates for state and municipal borrowing will be going up, taxpayers are losing their jobs, homeowners are having a difficult time meeting their current tax obligations and the Town of Holly Springs wants to issue a $20 mil bond for park and recreational wants. What’s wrong with this picture?

Councilman Sack, who is running for reelection, is quoted as saying ..”bonds would allow the town to make investments”….and “the longer we wait”….”the more expensive it will be”. What does Sack mean about return on investment? In this economic environment it would seem the priority should be to reduce expenses and invest in projects that create jobs. Regarding the waiting comment, the Town missed the boat on financing of the Hunt Center. They jumped the gun and as a result of that decision we have a renovation that cost $6.5 million and with the interest it brings the total cost to the taxpayers at over $10 mil. The Council, including Councilman Sack, approved a financing plan, recommended by town staff, to borrow at a 5.2% interest rate without the ability to refinance for 10 years. Why would anyone agree to these terms?

Councilwoman Williams recently stated “she doesn’t think it will be necessary to raise taxes”. How does she expect to raise this amount of money? The town is already maxed out on its credit card by having cost of debt at $3.7 million on $23.6 total general fund expenditures. As a result the town has a 16% debt ratio the highest of any town in Wake County. And to balance the budget, the town is borrowing $250,000 in installment financing and another $277,000 from fund balance. With this bleak of a financial borrowing potential, Williams seems to imply that the funds will come from cost reductions.

In addition, Councilman VanFossen also made a recent statement …”we have the borrowing capacity”. To many of us it is quite obvious there is no more leverage the town can use to borrow other than raising taxes. And if VanFossen was so concerned about the Hunt Community Center not having enough space, why didn’t he support land purchase of adjacent land that was put forth by Councilman Womble?

The assignment plan includes achievement as a small element of the equation, which could help prevent the concentration of too many low-performing students in some schools. Hill wants to make achievement a bigger part of the formula, equal to proximity.

They say a picture is worth 1000 words. In this case a picture is worth thousands of reaassigned children. In this photo, Kevin Hill presents the National School Boards Association Council of Urban Boards of Education's Award to the Wake County Board of Education.

And why did Wake County receive the award?

"The judges felt the (Wake} school board's commitment to diversity should be really recognized," said Katrina Kelley, director of the CUBE program.

And what did Kevin Hill have to say?

Mr. Hill addressed all of the Board members as he presented an award. Mr. Hill stated that,

“On Saturday, October 10th, the Wake County Board of Education was recognized by the National School Board’s Association’s Council of Urban Board’s of Education at their annual conference in Austin, Texas. It was one of the proudest moments in my long career with the Wake County Public School System, and now serving as a member of this Board to boot, to accept this recognition on behalf of the Board of Education.

The Wake County Board of Education received recognition for Outstanding Commitment and Service to Diversity. When receiving this plaque, I credited Ms. Rosa Gill for her leadership and initiative as chair of the past two previous years, along with the teachers and staff that make this happen daily for all of our children in Wake County.

The other school system that was recognized in this category was Jefferson County Public School System in Kentucky. They recently adopted a student assignment plan based on choice; it took 12 to 13 months to put their plan together. They contacted us last week because they wanted to talk because they didn’t feel it was working.

MAYORS, COUNCIL INVITE PUBLIC TO RALLY ROUND RALEIGH’S BONDS, TUESDAY IN NASH SQUARE

The public is invited to rally with Raleigh mayors past and present, and Raleigh City Council members in support of transportation and housing bonds.

Raleigh’s mayor for the past 10 years, Charles Meeker will be joined by former mayor Tom Bradshaw, who served as mayor from 1971 to 1973, and Smedes York who led the City from 1979 to 1983. Sig Hutchinson, chair of the bond support committee, will join the mayors in leading the event.

The rally to approve the City of Raleigh transportation and housing bond proposals will be held Tuesday, Oct. 4 at 11 a.m. in Nash Square.

LOCAL LEADERS TO SPEAK OUT AGAINST RALEIGH BOND PROPOSAL

Raleigh, NC – Representatives from Americans for Prosperity, the Wake County Taxpayers Association and other Raleigh citizens will join together Monday morning to speak against Raleigh’s proposed $56 million housing and transportation bond proposal.

The bond’s approval would add .91 cents per $100 valuation to the City of Raleigh property tax rate. In layman’s terms, the median priced Raleigh home ($188,139) would see a $17.11 property tax increase. While Raleigh’s website only references housing, “property” includes both real property (land and buildings, etc.) and personal property (vehicles, boats, mobile homes, aircraft, etc.)

Who among us hasn't spoken at a Worker's World Party Southern Regional Conference?

Or how about this dandy photo of her with school board meeting arrestee Dante Strobino at a socialist Raleigh FIST rally.

These students were used as props by her and others to push a leftist power enhancing agenda and had nothing to do with improving the lives of Wake County's most vulnerable children. I'm sure Elena probably pocketed some cash for her work as well - how non-socialist of her.

And what did the students get out of this? Well some got arrested. Have not seen her putting herself out there to get cuffed. Best to coerce others into doing your public dirty work.

Paul Fitts, Wake County native, and candidate for Raleigh City Council At-Large, was endorsed today by the Raleigh Professional Fire Fighters Association. The RPFFA joins the growing list of recent endorsements by the Raleigh Police Benevolent Association, The Homebuilders Association of Raleigh/Wake County and the Raleigh Regional Association of Realtors.

Fitts stated, "I’m grateful for this endorsement as citizens’ expectations for public safety and civil preparedness are rising, and at the same time the need to tighten budgets and to have broader oversight is increasing. Public safety is too critical to compromise. I will be an advocate for our police, firefighters and all first responders so that they continue to respond in real time, protecting our citizens and property.

Public safety isn’t just about having enough first responders to aid us when the needs arise…it’s also about taking care of the Police, Fire and other city employees who take care of us every day. Our police officers need to have the tools that allow them to fight the growing gangs and drug issues. We need to ensure that our first responders keep pace with our population with the continued addition of satellite police stations. Councilor Weeks The City reimbursed the Chamber for half of the cost of the trip - @$499.00.

No other funds were provided by the City to the Chamber for the Denver trip.

Council expenses, including travel, are supported by the General Fund budget. For the convenience of City residents and other interested persons, the adopted annual budget is available on the City website (www.raleighnc.gov).

No reimbursement receipts have been submitted to date.
